There is either a crank handle or a wheel on one side so if you want to uncover the pool, you just need to wind the handle, or a wheel and the roller neatly rolls the cover off the water. Automatic pool cover rollers 

Automatic pool covers rollers are basically manual pool covers with a motor which does the cranking or wheel turning for you. Occasionally, they still have the manually turned handle or wheel as a backup. There are 3 main types of automatic pool covers rollers:

The roller unit is hidden in a compartment that is buried either in the ground, pool surround, under the pool decking, or behind a water feature. The top of the compartment is usually made from either aluminum or wood and fits completely flush with the pool surround. These pool cover rollers can be either manual or automatic. Some types of hidden pool cover rollers are also track-guided which means that the pool cover is guided by tracks either anchored on the surface of the pool surround or under the pool deck.
