It is crucial to properly winterize the pool for the off-season so that you can sit back, relax, and enjoy a drink or snack inside the warmth of the heaters. However, before you hurry out to examine your pool, here is a list of frequent winter pool mistakes :

  • Did you brush your pool?: One of the most common inground pool mistakes individuals make while winterizing their pool is failing to fully brush all surfaces before closing. Brush your teeth for a few minutes. In the summer or spring, don’t let a few minutes of inconvenience escalate into hours of stain removal.
  • Not checking chemical levels: You should check your pool’s chemical levels every two weeks and make minor adjustments. Because the pool isn’t used much during the winter, the changes will be minor and shouldn’t take up too much of your time.
  • Running the filtration system every day: Just because no one is using the pool during the winter doesn’t mean you don’t need to filter the water every day. Even with the ideal pool balance, stagnant pool water can promote algae growth. Use a timing system or manually run your pool pump for at least 8 hours per day, or long enough for your pool to turn over all of its water.
  • Not monitoring your water levels: If you do not have a pool cover and do not monitor your pool water levels because it is chilly outside, you may encounter problems. Install an automatic water leveler so you don’t have to worry about water levels until spring and summer.
  • Not monitoring your filters: Just like your chemical and water levels, many people forget to check their filters, which is one of the most common pool mistakes during winter. Don’t worry; there’s no need to continually check your filters. Simply check the pressure gauges, and if the pressure is still within normal limits, there is nothing to do.
  • Leaving pool equipment in the pool: Pool equipment is not designed to be left in the pool for months at a time, despite the fact that it is designed to survive the environment and pool chemicals. If you aren’t going to use your pool equipment or cleaning tools this winter, give them a nice rinse, let them dry, and store them.

Swimming pool maintenance challenge: Summer Vs Winter.

A change in temperature can result in more aggressive water. Your pool water needs a state of balance between the water and the surface of your pool. Here’s what you need to know about the pool maintenance challenge  between summer and winter:

Summer pool cleaning

Maintain routine pool cleaning and chemical testing. Skim floating trash every several days. To remove suntan product residue, lightly brush the pool sides. Clean strainer baskets weekly and vacuum according to the instructions. Use algaecide and chlorine weekly. Maintain 1-4 ppm chlorine. Shock treatments are recommended after heavy rain or pool use because chlorine levels drop. Shock treatments work best in the morning or evening since intense sunlight reduces their efficacy.  Metal chelation products can remove rainwater or equipment corrosion spots on interior walls Finally, visually inspect the pool circulation popup nozzles. Run the circulation system four to six hours a day during summer pool use.

Pool maintenance in winter

Balance your pool’s pH, alkalinity, chlorine, water hardness, and other components. Test the pool a week before closing. Clean, store, and remove ladders and diving boards. Brush the inside walls and floor with a vinyl-approved soft brush. Remove dirt and vacuum as directed. Reduce the pool water level and clean the skimmer baskets. Disconnect the filter pump and drain the device per the instructions. Install a winter cover at last.
